  3. Configuring Dial-up Networking
This document assumes you have installed your modem
according to the manufacturer's instructions. Also, with Windows 98, you may be presented with some information screens on which you simply click the "OK" button.

STEP 1: Setting up TCP/IP

Open the Control Panel, and select the Network icon. You should see Dial-up Adapter. If you don't see Dial-up Adapter, click "Add" and choose "Adapter" from the next menu. Under "Microsoft" you will find "Dial-up Adapter". Click it once and then click "OK".

If you don't have TCP/IP listed, click "Add". Choose "Protocol" and then click "Add". In the next menu, click "Microsoft" on the left side and "TCP/IP" on the right side and then click OK.

Now you should see Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP in the Network Configuration box.

Highlight TCP/IP and click "Properties". Here are the settings for the six tabs on this menu:

IP address       : Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is checked.

WINS Configuration  : Make sure "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution" is checked.

Gateway          : Make sure everything here is blank.

Bindings          : Do not change anything in here.

Advanced        : Do not change anything here.

DNS Configuration : Check the "Disable DNS" box.

Click OK to exit that menu, and then click OK to finish with the Network Configuration.
You will have to restart the computer before continuing.

STEP 2: Installing Dial-up Networking

First, you should find out if you already have Dial-up Networking installed. (To find out, open Start, then Programs, then Accessories, and see if Dial-up Networking is there.
If it is, skip to
Step 3 : Configuring Dial-up Networking.

So you don't have Dial-up Networking installed? Before you begin, have your Windows 95/98 CDROM (or floppies) handy.

Open the Control Panel and select "Add/Remove Programs". Choose the "Windows Setup" tab. Highlight "Communications" and click "Details". Another menu will pop up and there's Dial-up Networking! Check the box and click OK. Now click "Apply" to start the installation process. It will ask for your CDROM or specific floppy disks.

Dial-up Networking is now installed. You will find it under "My Computer".

STEP 3: Configuring Dial-up Networking (for use with DHCP)

Now open Dial-up Networking. Double click on the icon called "Make New Connection" to start the setup program.

On the first screen, type a name for the connection ( Internet Frontier might not be a bad idea ) and make sure your modem shows up in the box below. Click "Next".

On the second screen, enter the phone number that will be local for you. Click "Next". (If we have not already enabled your account, temporarily enter your own phone number so that you can proceed to the next step.)

Now click "Finish" and the new connection will appear in the Dial-up Networking window. Click it once to highlight it and open the File menu in the Dial-up Networking window and choose "Properties". Click the "Server Type" tab to bring up another menu (older versions may have a button labeled "Server Type" in the lower right). Make sure that the "Type of Dial-up Server" is set to "PPP: Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.5, Internet". Make sure that NONE of the boxes below are checked except "ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION" and "TCP/IP".

Click the "TCP/IP Settings" button. Make sure "Server Assigned IP Address" is checked, and that "Server Assigned Name Server Addresses" is checked.

Click OK to exit out of each of the configuration menus. In the Dial-up Networking window, open the File menu and choose "Create Shortcut". When Windows asks "Place shortcut on desktop instead?" answer "Yes".

You are now ready to dial! Double click the Shortcut on your desktop (or the icon in the Dial-up Netwroking folder) and try it out. As soon as you see the status change to "Connected", you can open up Netscape or any of your favorite internet software and go for it!
