Windows XP Dialup Connection Setup
From the Windows-XP desktop, click START, then ALL PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES,
then COMMUNICATIONS, then NETWORK CONNECTIONS, then CREATE A NEW CONNECTION
(under 'Network Tasks').
Follow the steps through the "New Connection Wizard". Start by clicking the NEXT button.
In the window that appears, be sure the dot is on "Connect to the Internet", then click NEXT.
In the next window that appears, select "Set Up My Connection Manually", then click NEXT.
In the next window, be sure the dot is on "Connect Using a Dial-up Modem", then click NEXT.
In the window that opens, type in a name for the connection you are creating (for easy
identification, we suggest 'Internet Frontier'), then click NEXT.
In the window that opens, type in the Internet Frontier dialin phone number that is local
to you (if you don't know the number, call us at 925-938-2925 to confirm the best number to use),
then click NEXT.
In the window that appears, type in your Internet Frontier user name (userid). You can also
enter your password if you don't want to type it in each time you dial. Remember that
upper and lower case letters are different, so be sure to use the right one. (Leave the three
check boxes as they are; at a later time you may want to un-check, i.e., disable, the firewall entry.)
Click NEXT to continue.
You are now at the last window of the 'New Connection Wizard'. If you want a convenient dialing
shortcut placed on your desktop (you should), check the "Add a shortcut..." box, then click FINISH.
A final window (the "Connect Internet Frontier" window) will appear. You should not have to
change any of the entries. However, if the phone line to be used with the computer has the
'Call Waiting' feature, you should disable it before connecting to the Internet. To do so,
click the PROPERTIES button. In the window that opens, put a
check next to "Use dialing rules", then click the "Dialing Rules" button. In the window that
opens, highlight your Internet Frontier connection (if you have more than one dialup connection
listed), then click the EDIT button. Put a check next to "To disable call waiting, dial", and
enter "*70," (omit the quotes) in the small rectangle. Click APPLY to save the setting, and
click OK to return to the dialing window.
If the phone line is plugged into the computer, simply click on the "Dial" button.
